Tania Kaiser, a game rancher near Ellisras, Limpopo, won the prestigious Wildlife Ranching SA Game Rancher of the Year Award 2012. She is the first woman to receive the annual award that Wildlife Ranching South Africa introduced in 2006.
Tania and her husband bought the farm in 2002. In 2007, her husband died in a hunting-related accident. Tania decided to stay on the farm and continue what they had started. Today the farm is a successful ranching, breeding, hunting and eco-tourism business. She received an overseas trip worth R28000 sponsored by Jan de Man; an internet package from @lantic worth R20 000; and a bronze trophy.
Other award winners for 2012 include:
- Game Breeder of the Year: Piet Warren, near Gravelotte, developed breeding stock that is highly sought-after across the country. In 2012, he has individually staged an auction that achieved a turnover of more than R85 million.
- Biodiversity Award: Johan van der Merwe of Leopard Rock, Hoedspruit, owner of an 800 ha ranch and breeder of several scarce game species.
- Green Economy/BEE Award: Pieter Ernst of Bona Bona, a 650 ha ranch near Klerksdorp, North West who used engineering and green economy principles in the development of facilities, breeding, eco-tourism and hunting.
