Wildlife Ranching has a long and storied history in South Africa. The wildlife economy we know and passionately support today was born in the 1970s from the hard work, faith, and dedication of pioneering game ranchers.
Today, the spirit of those legendary game ranchers lives on in the members of Wildlife Ranching South Africa. We are proud to call the phenomenal men and women who play such a vital role in the unique South African conservation success story by securing essential wildlife habitat through the rewilding and protection of species and biodiversity, members.
Every year, WRSA rewards excellence amongst wildlife ranchers whose outstanding contributions in the four pillars of the wildlife economy promotes the entire industry and supports the continued growth of the Agro Ecological Sustainable Biodiversity Wildlife Economy in South Africa.
The awards representing the four pillars are:
- Game Breeder of the Year
- Hunting establishment (Local and international) of the Year
- Best Utilisation of Products
- Tourism product of the Year
The categories are judged by an independent panel, and scoring is standardised across various criteria. The Wildlife Rancher of the Year award is presented to the nominee with the highest score across all four award categories.
2023 Nominations now open
WRSA and the evaluation committee now call on members to nominate the game ranchers or role models they believe best represents excellence in the four award categories.
“They are ambassadors and role models who are well equipped to mentor others. Heavily involved in the industry, they give significant attention to good governance – financial management, record keeping and so on. While there are many impressive ranching enterprises, the winners had a solid track record of excellence and were able to tick all the boxes in our rigorous, objective scoring system.”
Each candidate is scored and evaluated independently. The scores are submitted to the WRSA board, there is an oversight process to ensure fairness, transparency, and objectivity.”
