WRSA has listened to the frustrations and challenges members have been expressing when it comes to buffalo ranching in South Africa. These frustration stem from the lack of capacity and financial constraints on overburdened state vets leading to delays in the process of registering buffalo ranches as well as delaying state vets or their representatives to attend buffalo testing as required.
To assist in ameliorating this frustration for members and state vets, WRSA is bringing a cooperative venture with The Buffalo Company under the leadership of Motsumi Darts to its members. Other stakeholders include representatives from WRSA, the Wildlife Group of the South African Veterinary Association (SAVA) and Department of Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD).

The Buffalo Company
The Buffalo Company will facilitate private vets to work under the mandate of DALRRD as authorised veterinarians to perform state functions within the scope of buffalo movement and testing.
The efforts of The Buffalo Company will focus on addressing the frustrations of buffalo ranchers. It has already been approved to run this authorized pilot project in the Limpopo province. One of the requirements of the project is a mandatory Continuing Profession Development (CPD) course which has been approved by DALRRD with formal Continuing Profession Development Status by the South African Veterinary Council.
Training for the new system
Recently, during a successful training day on 29 March 2023, a group of state and private vets received the CPD training where details of the diseases under discussion and the laboratory testing techniques were provided. All private vets who attended the course were trained in the correct procedures by recognized specialists.
Part of the process of authorizing private vets is to register and train each of them in the functioning of the WRSA Portal, an online electronic system which has already been approved by the Limpopo province and is being implemented in certain state veterinary areas. The electronic registration system was welcomed by all attendees, as the efficiencies of function and reduction of workload were clearly appreciated.
WRSA Portal
Besides ranch registration, the WRSA portal will host full database records of the animals that are tested, and their results will be stored on the electronic platform, which has the potential of providing epidemiologically significant disease testing information and will be invaluable to the national herd in the future. This will form subsequent stages of the process and will be implemented as the veterinarians that are authorised submit samples.
The WRSA Portal is available to all members through the WRSA website (www.wrsa.co.za/members/).
The pilot project
The pilot project will thus allow private veterinarians to function on behalf of State Veterinarians in Limpopo, interlinking with the State Veterinary offices, and the Provincial Director. Efficiencies of farm registration, buffalo testing in the field and efficiency of sample results can be expected, and the issuing of movement permits for inter-provincial and intra-provincial transport will be expedited.
The Buffalo Symposium
WRSA will be hosting the Buffalo Symposium on 20 May 2023 at Castle de Wildt in Modimolle, Limpopo.
This day will give members an opportunity to learn more about The Buffalo Company and the pilot project allowing authorization of private vets to work on behalf of the state regarding buffalo.
There will also be opportunity to learn about:
- the latest processes with respect to buffalo ranch registration,
- biosecurity from experts in the field,
- the latest updates on industry technical issues,
- the pilot project regarding authorised vets for buffalo testing.
Various disease control experts will give presentations with updates on particularly foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and brucellosis in South Africa, and the risk factors that these poses to buffalo ranchers considering current developments and new research.
The WRSA team will also be on hand to guide members through a hands-on process of registration of ranches on the WRSA Portal and the electronic application for the BU number.
