HUNTERS BEWARE: KNOW YOUR RIGHTS WITH ALLEGED TMPD MISCONDUCT AND CORRUPTION

22 June 2023 – WRSA an PHASA has been made aware of numerous serious complaints from members and hunters relating to allegedly corrupt interactions with the Tshwane Metro Police Department on the N1 from the Airport to Hammanskraal.

It appears that a criminal element is not only stopping vehicles for corrupt reasons, to extort bribes for unspecified infractions to fraudulent breathalyser tests with unauthorized equipment but have also apparently been targeting Safari vehicles and bakkies to search for firearms.

These alleged officers, who do not wear name tags and refuse to identify themselves, are extremely hostile while fabricating fraudulent interpretations of various firearm legislations and threaten the occupants of the vehicles with arrest.

In response to queries by organisations and the public the Acting Police Chief of the TMPD issues Directive 8 of 2023 to advise members of the public on their rights when interacting with TMPD officers.

Tshwane Alderman, Grandi Theunissen, issued a press statement (19 June 2023) supporting this directive empowering the public to fight possible corruption in the TMPD, reiterating that:

“1. You have the right, and are in fact encouraged, to ask TMPD officers for their appointment certificates (a card identifying them as a police officer).

2. You have the right, and are in fact encouraged, to record your encounter with TMPD officials. This includes videos and pictures of the officers, their appointment certificates, and their vehicles.”

Further, he encouraged members of the public who has fallen victim to these criminal activities to:

“1. Open a criminal case at the nearest police station.

2. Report the matter to the TMPD Integrity Unit on 083 657 2998 to enable an internal investigation into the conduct.

3. Report the matter to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) at complaints.gauteng@ipid.gov.za.”

Also on 19 June 2023, the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Councillor Cilliers Brink, issued a video a reiterating Alderman Theunissen’s words as well as a further media statement with the same.
