NATIONAL ANIMAL HEALTH UPDATE REPORT DECEMBER 2023: CAUTION ADVISED

24 January 2024 – The Ruminant Veterinary Association of South Africa (RuVaSA) have provided the latest disease reports to update farmers and ranchers on the prevalence of diseases and other conditions that veterinarians diagnosed during December.

According to Dr Peter Oberem, WRSA Director of Breeding, Animal Health & Biosecurity, says:

The report is very important to those that keep domestic stock whether only or mixed with game and cattle/sheep/pigs etc. as the domestic stock are susceptible to all of these diseases. The import thing, though, is that many of our game species, e.g. buffalo show absolutely no signs of being infected we tend not to worry, but it is massively important to us as game farmers. ON THE CONTRARY, the consequences to a game ranch of being declared FMD or Brucella-positive are too horrific to contemplate. By law ALL THE CLOVEN-HOOVED animals on that property will have to be destroyed and only after a quarantine period restocked at a huge cost.

It is thus critical that game ranchers read and understand this report and its consequences and take the biosecurity of their property and herds very seriously.
