WRSA have received confirmation of two cases of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in Osizweni, Newcastle, with further test results pending from two additional sites. A provisional 20 km control zone has been established, affecting areas near Utrecht, the N11 towards Ballengeich, Dannhauser and Dundee.
Key Points:
• The Newcastle State Veterinarian, Dr. Wandile Ngwenya, is working on securing vaccine priority for KZN.
• The vaccination program will focus on communal cattle outside the control zone.
• Commercial cattle owners are being urged to enhance biosecurity.
• Investigations are ongoing into the source of the outbreak.
• SAPS involvement is being implemented, and additional patrols may be deployed.
Farmers in Newcastle, Normandien, Utrecht, Ingogo, Botha’s Pass, Dundee, Elandslaagte, and Besters are advised to consider suspending sales.
Suspected main causes of the FMD spread:
1. Unregulated movement of lobola cattle.
2. Economic pressures leading to illegal sales outside the demarcated zone.
Please remain vigilant, adhere to movement restrictions and ensure your biosecurity measures are in place to prevent further spreading.
WRSA is ready to support our members with advice from our veterinarians who are on standby. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you require any assistance.
