Important updates for FMD

Please note important updates regarding Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

Find attached the press release by ARC (South Africa) regarding its first locally produced FMD vaccine.

FMD remains a serious threat, especially to disease-free buffalo, which cannot be vaccinated. A new SAVA Wildlife Group protocol outlines practical steps to reduce risk, including ring vaccination of surrounding cattle, strict biosecurity, careful wildlife movement control, and managing contact with species such as warthog and kudu.

Members are encouraged to stay informed and attend the FMD Buffalo Protocol Workshop on 14 February 2026 (online and at Onderstepoort), where these measures will be discussed in detail.

Please ensure you:

* Maintain strict farm biosecurity

* Follow all movement permit requirements

* Limit unnecessary animal movements

* Encourage neighbours to do the same

Working together is essential to protect our livestock, wildlife, and livelihoods.
