AS THE HOLIDAY SEASON APPROACHES, THE PUBLIC AND TRAVELLERS ARE WARNED ABOUT RABIES IN DOGS, CAPE FUR SEALS AND OTHER ANIMALS IN SA

Rabies is endemic in South Africa and has recently been confirmed in Cape fur seals. Be aware and informed this season to keep yourself, your loved ones, and pets safe. Avoid getting close to seals and be vigilant.
Rabies in dogs is very common in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Limpopo. Stay away from feral and stray animals, and do not pick up or take animals you don’t know, home.
In the drier, northwestern parts of the country the main carriers are suricates and foxes.
This warning was issued in a joint media release by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Department of Health and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, released on 26 November 2024. Members and farmers are urged to adhere strictly to the National Movement Restrictions, Legal Responsibilities, Reporting Requirements and Biosecurity Protocols.
If you are bitten by any animal behaving strangely, seek medical assistance immediately – time is of the essence and swift action will save lives.
Regular vaccination of pet dogs and cats against rabies will not only save their lives but possibly your own and those of your family members.
